The objective of this research was to find the empirical evidence whether
or not there was any relationship between students’ English learning motivation
and reading comprehension of the eighth grade students of SMPN 174 Jakarta in
the 2016/2017 academic year. The research was started on October, 18th 2016.
The population of the research consists of eighth grade students of SMPN 174
Jakarta and the sample of this research was taken of 8B, consists of 36 students in
it with survey method. In this research, the instruments used for getting the data
were questionnaire about students’ motivation and multiple choice test. The scores
were calculated using Pearson Product Moment Correlation to calculate the
correlation between X variable and Y variable.
The result of the analysis had shown that data of the two variables had
normal distribution using Chi-square test. The result of normality of the data
distribution (X variable) χ2o = 2.55 was smaller than χ2t= 7.81. The result of
normality of the data distribution (Y variable) χ2o= 5.08 was smaller than χ2t =
7.81. It can be concluded that sample came from the population which were
normally distributed. In the scattered diagram, the data scores were close to the
straight line which means that the data were linear. The finding of the research
showed that the calculation of Pearson Product Moment was that rt = 0.329 and ro
= 0.91 on significance level 0.05. It showed that ro was higher than rt (0.91 >
0.329). It can be said that Ho was rejected and Hi was accepted. To know how far
the relationship between X variable and Y variable, the writer used t-test formula.
From the t-test, it was known that the result if t-observed (to) = 12.8 is higher than
t-table (tt) = 1.70. Because (to > tt), it can be said that Ho was rejected and Hi was
accepted. In other words, there was a significant relationship between students’
English learning motivation and students’ reading comprehension of the eighth
grade students of SMPN 174 Jakarta in 2016/2017 Academic Year.
