An Error Analysis on Descriptive Writing of the Tenth Grade Students of SMAN 38 Jakarta in the 2014/2015 Academic Year

The objectives of the study are to discover the typical errors and the sources of typical errors on the students‟ descriptive writing. Based on the purposes, the writer intends to give explanation for this statement of problem “The most types and sources of errors which are made by the tenth grade students of SMAN 38 South Jakarta in 2014/2015 academic year in their descriptive writing”. In doing this research, the writer uses descriptive analysis in form qualitative.
The research findings showed that the types of errors which the students made were capitalization (14.14%), punctuation (13.80%), add a word (13.13%), spelling (11.44%), omit a word (11.11%), singular-plural (9.09%), verb tense (7.40%), word choice (5.38%), word form (4.71%), article (3.70%), word order (2.35%), meaning not clear (1.68%), incomplete sentence (1.34%), and run on sentence (0.67%). For the sources of errors, the first rank taken by carelessness (41.41%), the second rank is first language interference (30.30%), and the third rank is translation (28.28%).
The writer expects that this research can give positive contribution tothe students, teachers, and the school. For the students, they can improve their writing skill, and they can avoid making errors in writing. For teachers, this research is hoped to offer a good solution in teaching writing, especially to know the errors that are made by their students. For the school, this research is hoped to be useful for teaching learning activity by knowing the errors of students‟ writing, and it can increase the school‟s quality in students‟ writing skill.
