The objective of this study was to examine the effectiveness of using Small Group Discussion in teaching speaking skill. The research method used in this research was pre-experimental research. The sample was taken from the tenth grade students of Fatahillah Junior High School Tangerang. Pre-test and Post-test was given to that class. Pre-test was given to see the students’ capability in speaking before the treatment was conducted. Post-test will measure the effectiveness of the treatment towards students’ speaking skill in certain period. T-test was applied to calculate the data and to test the hypothesis.
The research findings indicated that t-𝑜𝑏𝑠𝑒𝑟𝑣𝑒𝑑 is 9.69 and t-𝑡𝑎𝑏𝑙𝑒 is 1.70. In this case, the table of t-distribution percentile score with df = 0.05 ( the probability 0.95 ), and n = 30 – 1 = 29 which could be concluded that t-𝑜𝑏𝑠𝑒𝑟𝑣𝑒𝑑 (9.69) is higher than t-𝑡𝑎𝑏𝑙𝑒 (1.70), so it means the Null Hypothesis (𝐻0) is rejected and 𝐻1 is accepted. In conclusion the Small Group Discussion is effective in teaching speaking skill.
