An Error Analysis on the Students' Recount Text at the Tenth Grade Students of SMK Karya Wijaya Kusuma in the 2016/2017 Academic Year

This research was conducted at the tenth grade students of SMK Wijaya Kusuma in the 2016/2017 academic year. The objective of the research was to find out the most typical grammatical errors and the sources of errors in studetns‟ recount writing. The samples of the research were 27 students. In the first meeting, the writer asked the students to make recount text based on the instruction in the writing task. The topic is “My Holiday”. After that, the writer collected the students‟ writing to be analyzed by marking the mistake. In the second meeting, the writer gave back the writing to the students. Next, the writer asked the students to re-correct their mistake that had been marked by the writer. Then the writer recollected the students‟ writing. After that, the writer analyzed the types of error by using Azar‟s theory and the sources of error by Brown‟s theory in the students‟ writing.
The result of the research revealed that the types of error on the students‟ writing were error in the verb tense (19.38%), capitalization (14.38), punctuation (11.25), omit a word (10%), spelling (8.75%), meaning not clear (8.75%), add a word (6.25%), word choice (5%), word order (5%), word form (3.75%), singular-plural (3.13%), incomplete sentence (1.88%), article (1.88%), and the last run on sentence (0.63%). Furthermore, the common errors on the sources of error were in the intralingual error (38.75%), context of learning (25.63%), communication strategies (18.75%), and interlingual transfer (16.88%). Regarding to the result of the research, it indicates that most students need more treatment and remedial teaching from the teacher to eliminate their error in English writing especially in verb tense and the tenth grade students of SMK Wijaya Kusuma Jakarta still need more practice in order to develop their writing.
