An Item Analysis of the English Summative Test for the Eleventh Grade Students of SMAN 7 Tangerang Selatan in the Second Semester of the 2015/2016 Academic Year

ILLAH NURWANTI. An Item Analysis of the English Summative Test for the
Eleventh Grade Students of SMAN 7 Tangerang Selatan in the Second Semester of

This research is done to find out whether or not the English summative
test for the eleventh grade students of SMAN 7 Tangerang Selatan had of good
items related to the difficulty level (facility value), the discriminating power, and
the effectiveness of options. This research was held at SMAN 7 Tangerang
Selatan on July 2016. The population of the research are 422 students of 11 classes.
The sample of the research are 78 students which are divided into 27% upper group and
27% lower group.
The methods was used in this research are quantitative and qualitative
analysis. The English summative test paper and students’ answer sheets used for
collecting the data. The collected data put in the tabulation forms. Moreover, it had
been used to analyzed further of the proportion of the correct responses of upper and
lower group. Based on it, the facility value and discriminating power were analyzed and
counted using the formula from Heaton. Meanwhile, the causes of the weakness were
analyzed qualitatively.
The result of the data analysis showed that, 27 items (54%) are categorized as
easy level, 21 items (42%) are categorized as medium level, and 2 items (4%)
categorized as difficult level in term facility value. In term of discriminating power,
there have been 39 items (78%) can be accepted and 11 items (22%) should be revised.
Based on the analysis that has been done in this research, the writer concluded that the
English summative test for the eleventh grade students of SMAN 7 Tangerang Selatan
has not been constructed with good items.
