The objective of this research was to find the empirical evidence of typical
errors and sources of error which the tenth grade students of MAN 5 Bogor in the
2016/2017 academic year made in their recount text writing. The population of
the sample in this research was the tenth grade students. It consists of 40 students,
but the sample was taken 30 students randomly.
In this research, the writer used recount analytical method. In collecting the
data, the writer used it method with the test technique to the students. The test was
given twice. Then, the writer analyzed them to get the empirical evidence of data.
The writer found the most typical errors done by the students were in Verb
Tense with 112 (15.86%), Add a Word with 98 (13.88%), and Punctuation with
78 (11.05%). The less typical errors done by the students were in Run on Sentence
with 4 (0.57%), Incomplete Sentence with 9 (1.27%), and Meaning not Clear with
20 (2.83%). In general, the typical errors done by the students were in Omit a
Word with 72 (10.20%), Capitalization with 68 (9.63%), Word Order with 64
(9.07%), Word Choice with 61 (8.64%), Spelling with 40 (5.67%), Article with 37
(5.24%), Singular-Plural with 27 (3.82%), and Word Form with 16 (2.27%).
Besides, the most sources of errors done by the students were in Intralingual
Transfer with 242 (34.28%), and Interlingual Transfer with 170 (24.08%). The
less sources of errors done in Communication Strategies with 148 (20.96%), and
Context of Learning with 146 (20.11%). After seeing the result of the research, it
indicated the students need more treatment and remedial teaching from the teacher
toward their errors in English writings.
