This research is intended to know whether there is a relationship between
students‟ anxiety and their English reading skill of the tenth grade students of
SMA Muhammadiyah 15 West Jakarta in the 2015/2016 academic year. The
independent variable (X) is the anxiety, meanwhile the dependent variable (Y) is
English reading skill.
The research used quantitative survey method. The population in this
research were five (5) classes with total 150 students of the tenth grade students of
SMA Muhammadiyah 15 West Jakarta academic year. There are X IPA 1, X IPS
1, X IPS 2, X IPS 3 , and X IPS 4. The writer used purposive sampling technique.
From those samples, the writer took only 30 students who belonged to X IPA 1
class as the sample of the research.To obtain the data of X Variable (anxiety), the
writer distributed questionnaire consisted of 33 items. To obtain the data of Y
Variable ( English reading skill), the writer used a reading test consisted of 30
items.
After analyzing the data, it was found that both sample data (X and Y)
have been normally distributed because χ²ₒ ˂ χ²t X data ( 3,54 ˂ 7,81) and Y
data ( 6,10˂ 7,81). The correlation found was r-observed= 0,554 and r-table=
0,394 in a significant 0,95 with n=30. Because r –observed ˃ r-table, so Hₒ was
rejected and Hi was accepted, it meant that there has been relationship between
students' anxiety and their English reading skill of the tenth grade students of
SMA Muhammadiyah 15 West Jakarta in the 2015/2016 academic year.
