An Item Analysis of the English Summative Test for the Tenth Grade Students of SMKN 8 Bekasi in The Second Semester of the 2015/2016 Academic Year

The objective of the study was to answer the question of the study, whether
or not the English summative test items for the tenth grade students of SMK Negeri
8 Bekasi in the second semester of 2015/2016 academic year had a quality of a good
test in term of the difficulty level, discriminating power, and the effectiveness of
the distracters. The methods used in this study were descriptive quantitative and
qualitative methods. Descriptive quantitative method was used to analyze the data
of the facility value, discriminating power, and the effectiveness of distracters.
Meanwhile, the qualitative method was used to describe the quality and the
weakness of the test items.
Based on the data analysis of the study, the tabulation of the facility value
showed the composition of the test: 8 items in the test or (32%) were categorized
as easy items, 12 items in the test or (48%) were categorized as medium items, and
5 items in the test or (20%) were categorized as difficult items. In the tabulation of
the discriminating power, the composition of the test showed: 1 item in the test or
(4%) was categorized as bad item and needed rejecting, 8 items in the test or (32%)
were categorized as poor items and needed revising, and 16 items in the test or
(64%) can be accepted. Those were deal with; the satisfactory items (8 items), good
items (6 items) and excellent items (2 items). In the tabulation of the effectiveness
of distracters, the composition of the test showed: there were 48 effective distracters
in the test or (48%), and there were 52 ineffective distracters in the test or (52%).
Based on the findings of the study, the writer concluded that the English
summative test for the tenth grade students of SMKN 8 Bekasi in the second
semester of the 2015/2016 academic year did not have good quality of test in terms
of facility value, discriminating power and the effectiveness of distracters. In this
study, the significances are considered for the English teachers and the school of
SMKN 8 Bekasi. The English teachers of SMKN 8 Bekasi are expected to get
reference of how to do an item analysis for the summative test, and for the school,
it can be used to find out the quality of the test items that have been made by the
teachers.
