This research was conducted at SMK Ki Hajar Dewantoro on the tenth
grade students in the 2013/2014 Academic Year. The objectives of the research
were to find out the most typical of error and the source of error in the students
descriptive writing. The populations of the research were the tenth grade students,
which consist of 360 students, and the samples were 40 students taken randomly.
Based on the aim of the research, the writer used a descriptive method. In
collecting the data, the writer administered a guided task on descriptive writing.
Meanwhile, to differentiate error and mistake, the writer gave one time of the test
to the students to write paragraph based on the instruction given by the writer. The
first meeting was used to give a test to the sample to write descriptive paragraph
and collect it. After that, the writer corrected the students’ writing by underlining
the mistake. Then on the second meeting the students re-correct their writing. If
the students can correct the mistake, it can be called mistake, but if the students
cannot correct the mistake, it called the error.
The study showed that the most typical errors done by the tenth grade
students were in capitalization with 26.58%, errors in add a word with 18.19 %,
and errors in word choice with 18.03 %. According to the typical errors above, the
writer found that the most sources which cause the students making the errors are
intralingual transfer with 61.07%, context of learning with 28.95%, interlingual
transfer with 6.48%, and communication of strategy with 3.48%. The benefit of
the research are hoped to be useful for learning by knowing the error of students
writing and increase the students quality in writing skill.
