The objective of this study is to find out the types of grammatical error and
the sources of error which were made by the students in descriptive writing at
SMK Telekomunikasi Telesandi Bekasi in 2016/2017 academic year.
In this study, the writer uses descriptive analysis method. The writer
provides a task on descriptive writing. After getting the data, the writer analyzed
and classified the errors based on the grammatical aspects and found the sources
of error.
The result of the study showed that the typical errors made by students in
their writing were the errors of capitalization as the first with 14.85% followed
by the errors of verb tense with 14.08%, omit a word 12.04%, word choice
9.23%, spelling 8.43%, singular-plural 8.03%, punctuation 6.82%, add a word
6.42%, run on sentence 5.62%, word form 4.81%, meaning not clear 2.41%,
incomplete sentence 1.60%, and article 0.80%. Besides, the sources of error that
caused the students’ error were intralingual transfer as the first sources with
35.3% followed by interlingual transfer with 32.5%, context of learning 22.4%,
and communication strategies 9.6%.
