This research aims to find out the relationship between students’ vocabulary mastery and reading descriptive text skill. This research was conducted in the SMPN 20 Jakarta in the first semester in the 2014/2015 academic year. The writer assumes that the average score of students’ ability of each class quite the same, because there is no excellent class, so the writer chooses the sample one class randomly that is VIII C that consists 35 students.
. This research uses a descriptive quantitative with a correlation technique. The instruments are used multiple choice questions. The calculation normality test of vocabulary mastery is χ2o= 3.59 < χ2t= 7.81. It means the data of students’ vocabulary mastery is normally distributed. Then, the calculation normality test of students’ reading descriptive text skill is χ2o= 3.13 < χ2t= 7.81. It means the data of reading descriptive text skill is normally distributed.
After the data were normally distributed and linier based on the tests for normality and linearity, it can be seen that variable X and Y are linier because the score of both variables are close to the middle line. Then, continued with an analysis of hypothesis testing. It is done by calculating the Product Moment Correlation and obtained 𝑟𝑟observed = 0.980 > 0.325 = 𝑟𝑟table with n= 35 in the significance 5% which means that Ho is rejected and Hi is accepted.
The last, the writer calculating the significance analysis that t-table = 1.70 and t-observed = 29.7. It can be seen that to 29.7 is higher than tt 1.70. Therefore, it can be concluded that there is a relationship between vocabulary mastery and reading descriptive text skill.
