The objective of the research is to find empirical evidence of whether or not there is any a significant relationship between the ability to use past tense and the recount text writing ability of SMAN 87 Jakarta in the 2014/2015 academic year. The hypothesis tested is whether there is a significant relationship between the independent variable (ability to use past tense) and dependent variable (the recount text writing ability). It was conducted on October, 8th in the tenth grade students‟ at SMAN 87 Jakarta.
The method of the study is a quantitative method. The writer took the data by using test instrument and did the research with a survey method. The instruments of this research are grammar test which consist of 40 items and writing recount text test essay. To calculate the correlation between X variable (Past Tense Mastery) and Y variable (Writing Recount Text Ability), the writer used Pearson‟s Product moment Correlation.
From the findings of the research, the writer concludes that there is relationship between the ability to use past tense and the recount text writing ability at the tenth grade students of SMAN 87 Jakarta. It is known the result of r-observed = 0.723 is higher than r-table= 0.349. As ro > rt, it can be said that Ho is rejected and Hi is accepted. From the t-test, it is known the result of t-observed = 5.72 is higher than t-table= 1.70. So there is a significant relationship between two variables. Practically through this study the writer hoped that her research will be useful for those who concerned with English teaching especially in past tense ability and writing ability. It becomes input to all English teaching, to develop better ways of English teaching program.
