The objective of doing this research is to get an empirical evidence of whether or not the reading exercises developed in ‘Developing English Competencies’ for the eleventh grade students are in line with the communicative reading competences. The object of the research is the reading exercises in the ‘Developing English Competencies’ textbook for the eleventh grade students of senior secondary school which is written by Achmad Doddy, Ahmad Sugeng, and Effendi and published by PT Setia Purna Inves. The method of the research is descriptive comparative analysis. The instrument of the research is checklist in a table containing a number of 11 reading sub skills required by the Communicative Reading Competences. The limitations of the research is the reading exercise in the ‘Developing English Competencies’ textbook which covers the reading sub-skills based on the communicative reading competences.
After analyzing the reading exercises in the textbook, the writer found that the reading exercises in the textbook is in line with the communicative reading competences. The result shows percentage of the reading sub-skills based on communicative reading competences in the reading exercises is 73%.
According to Arikunto’s classification, 73% can be categorized as a good exercises. It can be concluded that the reading exercises in the ‘Developing English Competencies’ textbook for the eleventh grade students of senior secondary school is in line with the communicative reading competences.
