The objective of the study is to find empirical evidence of whether or not reading exercises in Scaffolding for the Eighth Grade Students are in line with the communicative reading competence. The method of the study is a descriptive comparative analysis method. In this case, the writer compared only the contents of the reading exercises in the English textbook with communicative reading competence. The instrument used in doing this research 8 a checklists containing the sub skills presented by Munby’s communicative reading sub-skills. Each checklist is used for recording one unit. The samples that the writer used in analyzing the reading exercises with the communicative reading competencies in the textbook Scaffolding are 265 reading exercises. Based on the data analysis of the research the percentage and frequencies can shows such as; (1) understanding explicitly stated information has 14 frequencies and 5,3%, (2) understanding information when not explicitly stated has 28 frequencies and 10,6%, (3) understanding conceptual meaning has 121 frequencies and 45,6%, (4) basic reference skill has 15 frequencies and 4,1%, (5) skimming has 9 frequencies and 3,4%, (6) scanning to locate specifically required information has 78 frequencies and 29,4%. From the findings of the research, the writer concludes that the reading exercises in Scaffolding textbook for the eighth grade of junior high school are in line with communicative reading competencies.
