The objective of the study was to find out the most typical errors made by the Thai students learning English in Indonesia. In collecting the data, the writer gave the recount writing test to the students. Then the writer analyzed the writing errors done by the Thai students. This research which consists of 20 students, was conducted at several Universities such as UHAMKA, UIN Syarif Hidayatullah Jakarta, University of Muhammadiyah Jakarta, University of Muhammadiyah Malang, and University of Yogyakarta. In this research, the writer took each students as the sample randomly from each Universities.
The reason of choosing recount text for this research is the writer assumed that it will be easy for Thai students in expressing their ideas because they all already studied about the recount text before.
The study showed that the most typical error done by the Thai students were verbs tense with 33.33% in the first place, followed by adding a word with 17.96%, meaning not clear with 15.40% in the second and the third place. After that, the fourth place is word choice with 12.82%. Spelling with 10.25% in the fifth and omit a word with 5.12% in the sixth place. The last, singular- plural and word form with 2.56%
Furthermore, the most sources of error done by Thai students were (intra lingual transfer) with 69.24%. They made errors because of the failure of the students in understanding the rule of target language. Next errors made by the Thai students are caused by interference of the mother tongue (interlingual transfer) with 15.38%, and the last source of errors are caused by the students who wrote the sentence with their own style (communication strategies) also with 15.38%.
The results of the data analysis have shown that the most error for Thai students was error in verb tense. From that result, it is assumed that the students do not aware about the using of past form of verb in the recount text, or even they do not know the past form of verb from some words. It indicates that the students need more practice in order to develop their writing skill.
