The purpose of this research is to get empirical data of the relationship between students’ simple present tense mastery and their ability in writing descriptive text on the tenth grade students of SMA AN-NURMANIYAH Tangerang in 2015/2016 academic year. The research was conducted on January 18, 2016 at SMA AN-NURMANIYAH Tangerang. The writer took only 1 class (X.1) which consists of 40 students as the sample of the research. The research consists of two variables. The first variable (independent) is the students’ simple present tense mastery, and the second variable (dependent) is the students’ ability of writing descriptive text on the tenth grade students of SMA AN-NURMANIYAH Tangerang in 2015/2016 academic year. The instruments of this research were simple present tense test and descriptive writing test. The writer used the Person’s Product Moment Correlation to correlate both of the score, in which r observed was 0,80 and the critical value of the Pearson’s Product Moment Correlation from table in df = 40(40-2) in the level of significance 0.05 was 0.30.
The results of the analyzed data showed that the coefficient of robserved is higher than rtable (ro > rt) = 0.80 > 0.30 on the 5 % level significance, and it made the Ho was rejected and Hi was accepted. It means that there is a relationship between students’ simple present tense mastery and their ability in writing descriptive text on the tenth grade students of SMA AN-NURMANIYAH Tangerang in 2015/2016 academic year. Then, the significance analysis shows that tobserved is higher than ttable (to > tt) = 8.21 > 1.68 with df = 38 in the percentage 95 % of the distribution table. Thus, it can be summarized that, there is a significant relationship between students’ simple present tense mastery and their ability in writing descriptive text on the tenth grade students of SMA AN-NURMANIYAH Tangerang in 2015/2016 academic year.
The result of the research is expected to give benefits for the community, especially for the English teachers, it can be an input to help them in designing and teaching the next program for the students, thus the students’ ability in writing descriptive text can be improved. The writer also hopes this research can be useful for the other readers.
