The objective of this study is to find the empirical evidence of whether or
not teaching listening using English movie is effective to the tenth grade students
of SMAN 1 Jasinga Bogor in the first semester of the 2015/2016 Academic year.
The sample of this study was taken from the tenth grade students of X IS2 and X
IS3 classes around 33 students for both.The design of study is closely related to
quasi-experimental research. This study conducted pre-test, treatments, and posttest.
The technique of data collection was test. In the pre-test, the writer gave the
tests for both classes with the same instrument. In the treatment, the writer taught
the students for the control class without movie and using English movie for the
experimental class. After giving the treatment, the writer gave the post-test for
both classes with the same instrument.
Based on the result of the experiment by using English movie in teaching
listening abilities, it showed that the average pre-test of the experimental class
around 54.66 and the control class around 54. While the average post-test of the
experiment class around 61.60 and the control class around 60.27. Additionally,
the t-observed was around 1.70 whereas the t-table was around 1.49 from the
degree of freedom (64) in the significant level of 0.05. Due to the fact that
tobserved> ttable, Ho is rejected and Hi is accepted. Therefore, it can be concluded that
English movie is effective in teaching listening abilities to the tenth grade students
of SMAN 1 Jasinga Bogor in the first semester of the 2015/2016 academic year.
Thus, the English movie usage can be both effective and alternative media in
teaching listening abilities.
