The objective of the research was to find empirical evidences whether or
not the reading exercises in English In Focus for the Seventh Grade Students had
been in line with the communicative reading competence. The method of the
research is a descriptive comparative analysis method. In this case, the writer
compared only the contents of the reading exercise in the English textbook with
communicative reading competence. The instrument used in doing this research
were seven a checklist containing the sub-skills presented by Munby’s
communicative reading sub-skills.
The method of the research that the writer uses a descriptive comparative
analysis in doing this research. In this case, the writer compares the contents only
the reading exercises in the English in Focus textbook in line with Communicative
Reading Competencies and analyze the result of the comparison descriptively. The
sample that the writer used in analyzing the reading exercises with the
communicative reading competencies in English in Focus textbook are 112
reading exercises. Based on the data analysis of the research, the percentage and
frequencies can show such as: (1) skimming has 23 frequencies and 20%, (2)
scanning to locate specifically required information has 17 frequencies and 15%,
(3) getting the communicative value (function) of sentence and utterances has 4
frequencies and 4%, (4) getting explicitly stated information has 28 frequencies
and 25%, (5) getting information when not explicitly stated has 7 frequencies and
6%, (6) deducing the meaning and use unfamiliar local items has 28 frequencies
and 25%, (7) getting relations within the sentence has 5 frequencies and 5%.
From the findings of the research, the writer concludes that the reading
exercises in English in Focus textbook for the seventh grade of vocational school
are not in line with communicative reading competencies.
