The research was aimed to know the types of grammatical errors and the sources of error which were made by the students in descriptive writing.. The research was started on July 27th 2016 and finished on July 28th 2016. The subject of the research was the tenth grade students of SMA Muhammadiyah 4 Tangerang in the 2016/2017 Academic Year. The participant consists of 27 students. The research method was descriptive analytical method. The writer administers the writing task in free-writing form based on descriptive writing. After getting the data, the writer analyzed and classified the errors based on grammatical aspects and found the source of error.
The result of the research showed that the typical errors made by the students in the students‟ writing were based on Betty which is in Add a Word in the first rank with 22,4% and the lowest is in Word Form and Article 0,0%, and based on Alice and Hogue with the highest error is in Run-on sentence 58,1% and the lowest error is in Stringy Sentence 0,0%. Besides, based on the source error, the highest error is in Interlingual Transfer 50% and the lowest is in Intralingual Transfer 0, 0%.
Based on the result, the writer concluded that the tenth grade students of SMA Muhammadiyah 4 Tangerang still made errors in their writing. It shows that the students‟ of SMA Muhammadiyah need more practice in writing an English composition in order to reduce the students‟ errors and to improve the students‟ ability in writing an English composition.
