This research is aimed to find the empirical evidence of whether or not there is
significant relationship between motivation of learning English and the
speaking skill. The data collected through motivation test was conducted at
PGRI 109 Senior High School Tangerang on November 4th , 2015 in the first
semester of the 2015/2016 academic year.
This is a quantitative research, Questionnaire and speaking test (interview)
were used to collect the data. The population of the study was all the students
of eleventh grade of PGRI 109 Tangerang. Samples were taken 35 students at
eleventh social science class two. By applying Pearsons’ Product Moment
formula, it was found that the value of correlation coefficient was 0,51, while
the critical value “r” in the table with 0,05 significance level with the number
of subject 33 was 0,34.
Thus, the correlation coefficient was higher than critical value. By applying the
t-test, it was found that tobserve is 3,37 and the critical value “t” in the table 0,95
with free degree 33 was 1,70. The conclusion is that there is a significant
relationship between motivation of learning English and speaking skill of the
eleventh grade students of PGRI 109 Senior High School Tangerang in the
2015/2016 academic year.
