The aim of the research is to find the empirical evidence whether or not there is
a significant relationship between the ability to use vocabulary and reading
comprehension of the seventh grade students of SMP PGRI 9 East Jakarta in the
2014-2015 academic year. The research was started on December 20th 2014 to
January 8th 2015. The populations of this research are 120 students from three classes
of the students in the seventh grade of SMP PGRI 9 East Jakarta. For the sample, the
writer took class VII.1, VII.2 and VII.3 with 36 students in it by employing random
sampling technique.
This research is a kind of quantitative research which analyzed the data using
Pearson’s Product Moment of two variables: the ability of vocabulary (X) and
reading comprehension (Y). The finding of the research showed that average score of
(X) was 63.25 and (Y) 67.08. After calculating and analyzing the data, the result
showed Ft 1.78 while Fo 1.25, because Fo < Ft it can be said the data was
homogeneous. The regression analysis showed that the ability of vocabulary gave
83% contribution in reading comprehension. The empirical influence can be
described as follow: Ỹ = 7.67 + 0.93X. In the Pearson’s Product Moment showed
that robserved = 0.83 was higher than rtable = 0.32. The significance analysis showed that
the scores (tt) ttable was 1.70 while (to) tobserved was 8.64. Because to > tt, it means Ho is
rejected and Hi is accepted. So, it can be concluded that there is significant
relationship between the ability to use vocabulary and reading comprehension of the
seventh grade students of SMP PGRI 9 East Jakarta in the 2014-2015 academic year.
In short, the ability to use vocabulary influence in reading comprehension of
the seventh grade students of SMP PGRI 9 East Jakarta in the 2014-2015
academic year.
