The Objective of the research is to find the empirical evidence of whether
or not there is a significant relationship between the ability to use tenses and
descriptive writing skill of the eighth grade students of SMP Negeri 91 East
Jakarta in the 2012/2013 academic year.
The research used survey method with correlation technique. The
population of the research is the eighth grade students of SMP Negeri 91 East
Jakarta and the writer took one class that consists of 30 students for the object of
the research. The writer took the data by giving two tests. The instrument of the
research was tenses test and descriptive writing test. The writer used Pearson
Product Moment to know the relationship of two variables in this research. The
first variable (independent) is the ability to use tenses and the second variable
(dependent) is descriptive writing skill.
According to the result of the analysis and statistical calculation, it is
found that ro is 0.73 and rt is 0.361 with the degree of freedom (df = n- 2) is 28
and significance 5%. Because ro is higher than rt, it means that Ho is rejected and
Hi is accepted. Therefore, it can be concluded that there is a significant
relationship between the ability to use tenses and descriptive writing skill of the
eighth grade students of SMP Negeri 91 East Jakarta in the 2012/2013 academic
year.
