The objective of this research is to discover the effectiveness of using
pictures in teaching reading comprehension of the eighth students of SMP Negeri
184 Jakarta. The writer used quasi-experimental method. The population of this
research was the eighth grade students of SMP Negeri 184 Jakarta. The writer
took 34 students for the samples in each classes, experimental class and control
class. They were taken from the VIII-3 and VIII-1 by using random sample
technique.
The research findings show that using pictures in teaching reading
comprehension to the experiment class gets 78.76. While in the control class, that
using conventional technique gets 75.33. The writer conducted the hypotheses
testing by using t- test to know the effectiveness of using pictures in teaching
reading comprehension. From the computation results, tobserved: 2,09 and ttable:
1.67, because tobserved > ttable. In this case, Ho is rejected and Hi is accepted, so the
result of the research concludes that there is a significant effectivenes of using
pictures in teaching reading comprehension of the eighth grade students of SMP
Negeri 184 Jakarta in the 2013/ 2014 Academic Year.
The benefit of this research is to be useful for students and teachers. For
students, it can help the students on their understanding the sequence in texts and
it makes visual images as they read the texts and also will help them read more
effectively. For teachers, it expected can help them improve the ways of teaching
English.
