Barnes is a connoisseur of eccentricity: the figure of the oddball – the crank, hobbyist, or obsessive – frequently takes centre stage in his fiction, often in the guise of a distinctly unreli…
This article exemplifies an action research-based approach for addressing conversation skills in an EFL setting. In many EFL contexts, especially those where English is a required subject, getting students to speak can be a challenge. In 2011, at a private Japanese university, a year-long action research project was conducted to help 160 first-year students taking mandatory English classes spea…
For any Calder´on–Zygmund operator T, any weight w, and α > 1, the operator T is bounded as a map from L1(ML log log L(log log log L)αw) into weak-L1(w). The interest in questions of this type goes back to the beginnings of the weighted theory, with prior results, due to Coifman–Fefferman, P´erez, and Hyt¨onen–P´erez, on the L(log L) scale. Also, for square functions Sf,and…
Economic development is often held to be beneficial for gender equality. However, there is good reason to believe that persistent institutions such as religion, legal traditions, and family practices, also matter. This article provides an empirical assessment of the relative importance of development and historical determinants of gender equality at the crossnational level. To capture this long…
In 1966, Harry Kesten settled the Erd˝os–Sz¨usz conjecture on the local discrepancy of irrational rotations. His proof made heavy use of continued fractions and Diophantine analysis. In this paper, we give a purely topological proof Kesten’s theorem (and Oren’s generalization of it) using the pattern equivariant cohomology of aperiodic tiling spaces.
